GDP (Gross Domestic Product) measures the total value of goods and services produced within a sector or economy over a specific period.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the travel reservation services sector in Canada demonstrated stability, with monthly GDP values consistently around 3.1-3.2 billion CAD. The onset of the pandemic in March 2020 precipitated a sharp decline, with GDP plummeting to 1.66 billion CAD. This downward trend continued, reaching a nadir of 1.09 billion CAD in May 2020, representing a 65% decrease from pre-pandemic levels.

The sector has since experienced a gradual but steady recovery. By June 2022, GDP surpassed 1.98 billion CAD, marking a significant milestone in the industry's resurgence. The most recent data point (April 2024) indicates a GDP of 2.12 billion CAD.

While this represents a substantial improvement from the pandemic-induced lows, it remains approximately 32% below the May 2019 peak of 3.15 billion CAD. The recovery trajectory has shown signs of stabilization since mid-2023, with GDP values consistently ranging between 2.1-2.13 billion CAD.

This plateau suggests the industry may have established a new equilibrium, operating at about two-thirds of its pre-pandemic capacity. While the sector has demonstrated resilience and adaptability, full recovery to pre-COVID levels appears to be a longer-term prospect.
