Penghu: Taiwan’s Island Treasure

Venture off the coast of Taiwan to the crystal clear waters of Penghu – an archipelago of 90 stunning islands scattered like pearls throughout the Taiwan Strait. With brilliant blue skies, pristine white-sand beaches, delicious fresh seafood and a wide variety of water sports to take part in, Penghu is an extraordinary treasure for all who seek the tranquility of the island lifestyle.

Countless natural wonders are sprinkled throughout Penghu, which is truly a geology buff’s dream. Basalt columns formed from the rapid cooling of volcanic lava can be found in its many islets – the famous of which is a peculiar natural arch on Xiaomen Isle known as the “Whale Cave.” Those who want to experience the phenomenon of “walking on water” can venture to Kuibishan, where a narrow trail slowly appears between the beach and a basalt hill whenever the tide is low.

Mazu Temple, the oldest temple in Taiwan (dating back to the early Ming Dynasty of the 15th century), can be found within Penghu’s largest city – Magong. The temple features a wood carving of the Chinese sea goddess Mazu that is said to be over 700 years old, carved from a single piece of wood. Additional must-see sites are the Penghu Great Bridge with its frequently photographed, colossal white arch and the Twin Heart Stone Weir – a curving weir formed from piled rock walls romantically shaped like two intertwined hearts.

Tours are available to take you from island to island, but each islet is small enough to explore via motorbike. Not only is this a convenient and cost-effective way to navigate the terrain, but you’ll have the opportunity to stop by the countless residences incorporating island materials into their architecture (such as walls made from coral).

If you’re planning a visit to Taiwan, you may consider scheduling your trip between the months of September and October 2018, as Penghu will be hosting various fairs and forums during the 2018 Most Beautiful Bays in the World Carnival. Join delegations from 40 bay areas, cities and counties for a month of festivities celebrating the vast beauty of this cherished island paradise.
